About
This evergreen tree typically grows 10-40 metres tall, often found along rivers and streams in tropical Africa. Its glossy, leathery leaves are lanceolate and usually arranged in whorls, with prominent pale yellow veins. Small, sweetly scented flowers, ranging from pale mauve to yellowish, cluster in spherical heads, followed by small, bristly capsules. The timber is valued for its hardness, density, and termite resistance.
Where it works in Kilifi
This handsome, fast-growing tree makes an impressive specimen in large Kilifi-coast gardens or parks, particularly along permanent water sources or in areas with consistent moisture. It requires bright, direct sunlight to partial shade and prefers well-drained loamy soil. As it develops an extensive root system, plant it away from foundations, paving, or swimming pools.
Growing notes
This tree exhibits a fairly fast growth rate, potentially adding at least one metre per year. Once established, it requires regular watering and prefers soils that dry out almost completely between waterings, as it is not drought-resistant but also dislikes permanently waterlogged conditions. Propagation can be done via seeds or cuttings, though seed germination rates can be low.
