About
This drought-tolerant tree typically reaches 5 to 8 metres in height and is noted for its thin, paper-like bark that exfoliates in delicate layers. It produces a distinctive dark, often black, aromatic resin, which is its most recognised feature. The small, white flowers develop into pear-shaped or subglobose fruits.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for dry woodlands and rocky areas, this species thrives in full sun and requires excellent drainage, similar to a cactus mix. It can serve as a resilient specimen tree or for restoration in suitable Kilifi coastal landscapes.
Growing notes
A slow-growing tree with a mean annual radial growth rate of 2.5 mm, it is highly drought-tolerant once established, needing moderate watering only when the soil is completely dry. It is sensitive to excess humidity and will lose its leaves during prolonged dry periods or cold temperatures, entering dormancy.
