About
This deciduous tree typically grows up to 15 metres tall, often with a rounded, flattened crown and drooping branches. It features dark grey, rough, and corky bark, alongside leathery, narrowly lanceolate leaves up to 15 cm long. Small, creamy-white to yellowish-green flowers appear in dense clusters, followed by spherical, smooth, yellow fruits, about 2 cm in diameter, which are favoured by birds.
Where it works in Kilifi
A resilient choice for the Kilifi coast, this tree thrives in full sun and well-drained soils, including stony or sandy types, reflecting its adaptation to semi-arid conditions. It serves well as a specimen tree, for providing shade, or in dry woodland restoration efforts.
Growing notes
Boscia salicifolia exhibits a medium growth rate and strong drought resistance once established, shedding its leaves during dry seasons. Seeds germinate readily without pre-treatment, but should be sown soon after harvesting as they are perishable. No known hazards are associated with this species.
