About
This evergreen shrub or small tree typically grows up to 6 metres tall, featuring dark grey-brown, smoothish bark and stiff, very dark green leaves. Its leathery leaves are oblong-lanceolate or obovate, often tipped with a sharp point. It produces green-white flowers without petals in terminal spikes from April to July, followed by round, hairless fruits that ripen from yellowish to red between July and September.
Where it works in Kilifi
A hardy and low-maintenance ornamental, it thrives in Kilifi coast gardens in full sun to partial shade, preferring moist, well-drained soil. It is suitable for dry woodland conditions, making it ideal for restoration efforts or as a specimen plant in a water-wise landscape.
Growing notes
This drought-resistant species is generally low-maintenance once established. It can be propagated from seed or cuttings and requires regular watering during its establishment phase. Fertilise lightly during the growing season to support its growth.
