About
Bivinia jalbertii is a deciduous tree growing 20–30 metres tall with a straight, cylindrical trunk. It features ovate to broadly elliptic leaves with reddish petioles. Its spherical fruit capsules release seeds covered in distinctive long white cottony hairs.
Where it works in Kilifi
This tree thrives in coastal bushland and semi-deciduous forests on rocky hills, making it suitable for Kilifi coast gardens. It prefers well-drained sandy loams or deep sandy soils. It can serve as a specimen or shade tree.
Growing notes
Bivinia jalbertii grows moderately fast and is easily propagated by seed. Young plants require ample water, but established trees are tolerant of dry conditions. It coppices well and can be found in areas with higher humidity and fog.
