About
An erect annual herb, typically growing 0.3-2 meters tall, with reddish-tinged, 4-angled stems. Its opposite leaves are pinnately compound, often with 3-9 broadly ovate leaflets. The small flower heads feature yellow disc florets, sometimes surrounded by white to yellowish ray florets, developing into distinctive black, barbed seeds that readily attach to clothing and animal fur.
Where it works in Kilifi
This robust herb thrives in full sun and a wide range of soil types, including moderately dry and saline conditions, making it suitable for pioneer roles in disturbed or coastal areas of Kilifi. Its quick establishment can aid in rapidly covering open ground.
Growing notes
A fast-growing species, it establishes quickly and requires minimal water once established, tolerating drought and a broad pH range. Be aware of its prolific seed production and rapid dispersal, as it can spread aggressively in gardens.
