About

Bersama abyssinica is an evergreen shrub or medium-sized tree, typically reaching 7-15 metres tall with a maximum height of 25 metres. Its bark is grey, brown, or mottled and becomes rough with age. The compound leaves feature 5-10 pairs of dark green leaflets on a stalk that can be wingless or distinctly winged, particularly when young. Flowers are greenish-cream, often pinkish in bud, and arranged in thick, upright spikes. The fruit is a woody, rounded capsule, 1-3 cm in diameter, splitting to reveal bright orange-red seeds partially covered by a waxy yellow aril. All parts of the plant are poisonous.

Where it works in Kilifi

This species is suitable for a Kilifi-coast garden or landscape, thriving in full sun to partial shade and adaptable to various soil types, including those found in lowland bush savanna. It makes an excellent ornamental or shade tree and can also be used effectively in living fences. Allow ample space if planting as a specimen tree.

Growing notes

Bersama abyssinica is a fast-growing tree that regenerates easily from seed, cuttings, wildlings, or root suckers. Once established, it is relatively hardy with moderate water requirements. Seeds are sensitive to freezing and should have their aril removed before storage, retaining viability for approximately two months at room temperature. A significant caution is that all parts of the plant are poisonous to humans and livestock.
