Berchemia discolor is a semi-deciduous tree, typically growing 3 to 20 metres tall, forming a dense, rounded crown. Its dark grey bark is often cracked and scaly, while the shiny dark green leaves are paler beneath and sometimes sticky when young. Small, greenish-yellow flowers develop into sweet, edible, oval fruits that ripen from green to yellow or reddish-brown, containing 1-2 flat seeds.
Where it works in Kilifi
This drought-tolerant species thrives in full sun and prefers well-drained soils, including sandy and rocky types common in coastal Kenya. Its non-aggressive root system makes it suitable for specimen planting, shade, windbreaks, or restoration in larger Kilifi gardens, even near watering points.
Growing notes
Berchemia discolor is a fast-growing tree, with a growth rate of 600-800 mm per year. It is very drought-tolerant once established but benefits from regular watering during establishment. While it is sensitive to frost, this is not a concern for the Kilifi coast.
