A small to medium-sized tree, typically reaching 4-8m, sometimes up to 15m. It features a straight stem topped with a rounded crown, and greyish-brown bark often mottled with white. Large, leathery leaves cluster at branch ends. Distinctive flowers are borne on long, pendulous racemes, opening at night with delicate white to pale pink stamens, often emitting a pungent yet sweet scent. The quadrangular, buoyant fruit is hard and fibrous, turning yellowish-brown when mature.
Where it works in Kilifi
This decorative tree thrives in humid, moist coastal conditions, tolerating slightly saline environments and heavy clay, loam, or rich volcanic soils. It is ideal for planting along tidal riverbanks, in swampy areas, or behind mangroves in a Kilifi garden for its ornamental value and as a shade tree, or for restoration projects in coastal wetlands. Plant in full sun with approximately 4m spacing.
Growing notes
The Powderpuff Tree is fast-growing and can be propagated from seed or cuttings. Once established, it tolerates both wet and dry periods but thrives with consistent moisture. It is highly sensitive to frost, requiring warm tropical conditions. All parts of the plant, especially the fruit and seeds, are reputed to be poisonous and contain saponins.
