Barleria usambarica is an East African herb native to the Usambara Mountains in Tanzania. It is an accepted species within the diverse Barleria genus, which typically includes herbs or shrubs found across tropical and subtropical regions of the world. The genus is known for producing fruit in the form of explosive capsules.
Where it works in Kilifi
This species would likely thrive in a Kilifi-coast garden, preferring full sun to partial shade and well-drained, compost-rich soil. It can be used as a specimen plant, in mixed borders, or as a low hedge, with spacing depending on desired density.
Growing notes
Most Barleria species are fast-growing and, once established, can be fairly drought resistant, although regular watering promotes optimal growth and flowering. Pruning after flowering is recommended to maintain a compact shape and encourage a flush of new blooms.
