About
Barleria maritima is a spiny evergreen herb or scrambling shrub, typically reaching up to one metre in height. It produces attractive yellow to orange flowers. Native to southeastern Kenya and eastern Tanzania, it naturally occurs in seasonally dry tropical biomes.
Where it works in Kilifi
This species is suitable for coastal Kilifi gardens and landscapes, thriving in sun or part shade. It can be used for hedging and may contribute to restoration efforts on coral cliff tops due to its self-seeding habit.
Growing notes
It is easily propagated from cuttings. As a spiny plant, caution is advised during handling and when selecting its placement.
