About
This herbaceous plant typically features simple, opposite leaves. Flowers are usually showy, often with five lobes, and can vary from nearly radially symmetrical to distinctly two-lipped. The fruit is a capsule containing 1-4 flattened seeds, which are commonly covered in hygroscopic hairs and dispersed explosively upon ripening.
Where it works in Kilifi
This tropical herb thrives in full sun to partial shade in well-drained soil. It is suitable for groundcover or naturalising in a Kilifi-coast garden.
Growing notes
Once established, this species is generally drought-tolerant but performs best with regular watering. Many Barleria species are known for their fast growth and explosive seed capsules that disperse seeds.
