About
Bamboo is a versatile, fast-growing woody grass characterised by its hollow, segmented culms which can be green, yellow, or striped. It forms dense clumps and is known for its strong, lightweight poles that are widely used in construction, furniture making, and handicrafts. This resilient plant also plays a crucial role in environmental conservation by stabilising soil and acting as an efficient carbon sink.
Where it works in Kilifi
Thriving in warm, humid coastal climates, bamboo is an excellent choice for Kilifi-coast gardens. Plant in full sun in well-draining, loamy soil for use as a fast-growing screen, live fence, specimen, or for erosion control; ensure adequate spacing of 2-4 metres between plants.
Growing notes
Bamboo establishes quickly, maturing in 3-5 years with continuous harvesting possible for decades. While drought-tolerant once established, young plants require consistent watering, especially during dry spells, and benefit from mulching to retain soil moisture. Ensure good drainage to prevent waterlogging.
