About
Neem is a fast-growing, evergreen tree that typically reaches 15-20 metres in height, forming a broad, dense, and roundish crown with spreading branches. Its leaves are pinnately compound, dark green, and can be 20-40 cm long, bearing numerous leaflets. It produces small, sweet-scented white flowers and ellipsoidal, one-seeded fruits that ripen from green to yellow. The tree is highly valued for its medicinal properties and as a natural insecticide, primarily due to compounds like azadirachtin found in its seeds and leaves.
Where it works in Kilifi
This resilient tree thrives in the Kilifi coast climate, adapting well to poor, rocky, dry, and infertile soils and tolerating high temperatures. It is an excellent choice for providing dense shade, enhancing soil fertility, serving as a windbreak, or for urban regreening projects. Ensure planting in well-draining areas, as it does not tolerate waterlogging.
Growing notes
Neem is fast-growing after its first year and, once established, is remarkably drought-tolerant, capable of surviving extended dry seasons with minimal water. It prefers well-draining soil and full sun, although young seedlings can tolerate some initial shade. Be aware that it can become weedy in some areas due to prolific seed production and efficient dispersal by birds.
