About
This small to medium-sized mangrove tree grows up to 14 metres in tropical regions and features smooth, light-grey, flaking bark. Its thick, leathery leaves are shiny olive green above and covered with dense grey hairs beneath, often exhibiting salt crystals. It produces distinctive 'pencil roots' (pneumatophores) that emerge from the mud, and small, creamy-yellow, sweetly scented flowers develop into green, oval, two-valved capsules with viviparous seeds.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for coastal areas in Kilifi, this pioneer species thrives in full sun within intertidal zones, stabilising estuarine banks and contributing to mangrove restoration. It can be planted in consistently wet or waterlogged loamy soils with a pH of 6-8.5.
Growing notes
This hardy mangrove tolerates extreme weather, high winds, and a wide range of salinities and temperatures, though it is intolerant of shade. Regular watering is essential to maintain consistently wet or waterlogged soil, mimicking its natural habitat.
