About
Athroisma pusillum is an annual herb, typically growing 25–50 cm high, with nearly smooth young branches. Its narrowly triangular leaves are 2–6 cm long and 0.7–1.5 cm wide, featuring a shallowly cordate base, dentate margins near the base, and an acuminate apex. The plant produces solitary flower clusters (glomerules) on short lateral branches, each 5–9 mm in diameter with 35–45 pale mauve florets.
Where it works in Kilifi
Native to Kenya, including the Kwale District, this species is found at altitudes of 350–500 m. It naturally colonises disturbed sites like grazed grasslands and riverine areas, making it suitable for restoration projects or naturalised plantings in a Kilifi-coast garden. It prefers open, sunny locations and well-drained soils.
Growing notes
As an annual, this herb completes its life cycle within one growing season. It is adapted to tropical climates with seasonal rainfall and demonstrates notable drought tolerance once established. Germination often occurs after seasonal rains, allowing it to quickly establish and produce abundant seeds.
