About
This evergreen species typically grows as a shrub or small tree, reaching up to 12 metres tall, with a small trunk and a spreading crown. It features smooth to rugulose, greyish-brown bark and thick, leathery, simple leaves that are entire-margined, elliptic to obovate-elliptic, and typically 5-12 cm long. The plant is dioecious, producing small, unisexual flowers in racemes.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for coastal forest restoration or as a specimen plant in a Kilifi garden, this species thrives in well-drained, sandy or lateritic soils, particularly on coral rag or limestone substrates. It tolerates full sun to partial shade and is well-suited to areas with high mean temperatures and seasonal water stress.
Growing notes
Adapted to moderate annual rainfall (800–1200 mm) with a pronounced dry season, this species is drought-tolerant once established. It is hardy in warm coastal environments. Specific propagation protocols are not widely documented.
