About
This slender, unbranched palm grows up to 30 metres tall with a solitary, erect trunk marked by prominent leaf scars and topped with a bright green crown shaft. It bears large pinnate leaves and produces ovoid fruits that ripen to orange or scarlet, containing the seed widely known as the betel nut. The nuts have a long history of traditional use as a stimulant and in cultural ceremonies.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for tropical lowland gardens, this palm thrives in full sun once established, with seedlings needing initial shade. It requires moist, well-drained, fertile soils and abundant, well-distributed rainfall. Plant as a striking specimen, for shade, or in mixed plantings, allowing at least 3 metres spacing for mature growth.
Growing notes
A moderate to fast-growing palm, it needs consistent moisture and has poor drought tolerance. It is frost tender and sensitive to extreme temperature fluctuations. Ensure good drainage as it dislikes waterlogging.
