About
This evergreen coniferous tree can reach heights of 50–70 metres, featuring a straight trunk and a conical crown. Its distinctive grey-brown bark peels in thin, horizontal strips, giving it a characteristic 'hoop' appearance. Young leaves are awl-shaped and stiff, becoming scale-like and incurved on mature trees. The tree produces ovoid cones that disintegrate when mature to release edible, winged seeds.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal as a striking specimen or shade tree in large Kilifi-coast gardens and landscapes, positioned away from direct seashores where it does not thrive well. It prefers full sun to partial shade and well-drained loam soil.

Hoop Pine is a slow-growing tree that can live for hundreds of years. It requires regular watering during establishment, becoming more drought-tolerant once mature, and thrives in areas with moderate to high humidity.
