About
This robust epiphytic orchid forms large clumps, featuring cane-like, yellow pseudobulbs that can reach 50-120 cm in height. It produces 6-7 narrowly lance-shaped, pleated leaves and showy, fragrant flowers, typically yellow or greenish-yellow, often marked with distinctive brown spots, blooming in late spring and summer. An unusual characteristic is its dense mass of upward-pointing aerial roots that form a 'trash basket' to collect rotting leaves and detritus for nutrients.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for a Kilifi-coast garden, this orchid thrives as a specimen plant, best wedged into a tree fork or secured onto a large branch to accommodate its potential large size. It requires bright, indirect light, tolerating morning or late afternoon sun, but should be protected from intense midday sun.
Growing notes
Requires high light levels and strong air movement. Water plentifully during its active growing season in summer, allowing the substrate to dry out between waterings. Reduce watering significantly in winter to provide a dry rest period of 4-6 weeks, which is crucial for inducing flowering, and mist occasionally to prevent excessive drying. It prefers warm temperatures (20-30°C during the day) and can tolerate occasional mild frost. Fertilize weekly at half strength during active growth, reducing or ceasing during the winter rest. Repot every 2-3 years using a coarse, well-draining orchid mix.
