About
This fast-growing, semi-deciduous tree typically reaches 5-9 metres in height with an open, spreading crown. It bears dark green, velvety leaves and fragrant, pale green flowers. The distinctive heart-shaped to conical fruit has scaly green skin, enclosing sweet, creamy white flesh with numerous inedible black seeds.
Where it works in Kilifi
Annona cherimola is not well-suited for lowland tropical climates like the Kenya Coast (Kilifi). It prefers cooler, higher elevation conditions and struggles with high heat and humidity.
Growing notes
The tree has a moderate to fast growth rate and requires consistent moisture during active growth, but established plants can tolerate some drought. Protect young trees from strong winds, as their root system is initially weak, and stake them for the first few years. The seeds and other plant parts are toxic if ingested, and contact of crushed seed juice with eyes can cause blindness.
