About
A medium-sized, mostly stemless aloe forming rosettes of upright, lance-shaped pale olive-green leaves with distinctive close-set longitudinal stripes. The fleshy foliage can develop attractive dark red or burgundy tones when exposed to strong sun or dry conditions, and its margins are armed with sharp, reddish-brown teeth. It produces sturdy flower stalks bearing dense, rounded clusters of vibrant red, orange, or yellow tubular flowers, typically in autumn.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for full sun positions in dry gardens, as a specimen plant or in large containers, due to its drought tolerance. It requires well-drained, gritty, or rocky soil and should be placed away from foot traffic due to its sharp leaf margins.
Growing notes
This aloe has a moderate growth rate and is drought tolerant once established, requiring occasional to infrequent watering; allow the soil to dry completely between waterings. Protect from frost, as it is sensitive to temperatures approaching 0°C.
