About
Aloe rabaiensis is a succulent, evergreen, stemless to very short-stemmed or sprawling shrub, typically growing up to 2 metres tall. It forms rosettes of fleshy, lance-shaped leaves that are vibrant green, often tinged with red in full sun, and armed with sharp, reddish-brown teeth along their margins. This species produces vibrant racemes of bell-shaped flowers that can be red, orange, or bright yellow.
Where it works in Kilifi
This resilient aloe thrives in bright, sunny locations along the Kilifi coast, though it can tolerate some shade. It requires well-drained sandy soil, making it suitable for rocky outcrops and dry bushland-mimicking garden beds. Ideal as an ornamental specimen, it also contributes to soil stabilisation.
Growing notes
A low-maintenance succulent, Aloe rabaiensis is well-adapted to dry conditions, needing minimal water once established due to its water-storing leaves. Ensure extremely well-drained soil to prevent root rot, as it is highly susceptible to overwatering. It is not tolerant of frost, but hardy in tropical coastal conditions.
