About
Aloe massawana is a succulent herb forming dense clumps up to 3 meters wide, featuring compact rosettes of lance-shaped, green to gray-green leaves up to 90 cm long. Its leaf margins are armed with small teeth, and tall, branched stalks bear clusters of vibrant coral-red to salmon-red tubular flowers, typically appearing in the drier months. This species is often mistaken for Aloe vera due to similar leaf traits.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for Kilifi-coast gardens, this aloe thrives in full sun and well-drained, sandy soils, tolerating extreme coastal and salt spray exposure. It works well as a specimen plant or for mass planting in rock gardens, with ample space for its spreading clumps.
Growing notes
This fast-growing and adaptable aloe is drought-tolerant once established but benefits from occasional summer watering to plump up its leaves. It requires excellent drainage to prevent root rot and is hardy in mild to hot climates, but sensitive to frost. While some sources indicate it may induce vomiting if ingested, it is generally low-maintenance.
