About
This indigenous shrub typically features grey bark and young branchlets with greyish-brown, appressed hairs. Its alternate, three-lobed leaves have obovate-elliptic terminal leaflets, 3-8.5 cm long, often with hair-tuft domatia in the vein axils beneath. Small yellowish-green, cream, or white flowers develop into ellipsoid-globose red fruits, about 6 × 4 mm, rarely turning black.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for coastal Kilifi gardens, this shrub thrives in sunny spots with well-draining loamy soil, tolerating conditions often found on coral rag. It is suitable for establishing hedges, mixed thickets, or for restoration plantings at altitudes from sea level up to 700 metres.
Growing notes
This species is considered fairly fast-growing. Once established, it requires watering when the soil largely dries out and benefits from a humid environment. Regular pruning can help maintain its shape and encourage vigorous growth.
