About
This deciduous shrub or tree typically grows up to 10-20 metres tall, often branching freely from the base to form a rounded or flattened crown. It features smooth, grey to brown bark that may peel in thin strips. The attractive flowers are whitish with red tinges and prominent reddish staminal tubes, followed by brown, semi-woody pods that turn reddish-purple when ripe.
Where it works in Kilifi
Suited for a Kilifi-coast garden, this tree thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. It makes an excellent specimen or shade tree and is indigenous to the region, fitting well into restoration plantings. Adequate spacing should be considered for its mature size.
Growing notes
This fast-growing species is hardy and generally adaptable once established. It prefers full sun and well-drained conditions. Mulching can aid in moisture retention and weed suppression.
