About
Albizia gummifera is a large deciduous tree growing up to 30 metres tall, characterised by a flat top and smooth grey bark. Its shiny, dark green leaves are bipinnate with numerous small, almost rectangular leaflets. The tree produces attractive white-pink flower clusters with prominent, often crimson-tipped stamens, followed by glossy reddish-brown, flat pods containing 8-14 seeds.
Where it works in Kilifi
This species thrives in full sun and well-draining soil, making it suitable for Kilifi's warm, tropical climate. It serves well as a specimen tree, a shade tree in gardens or pastureland, and for erosion control and soil improvement.
Growing notes
A fairly fast-growing tree, Albizia gummifera requires regular deep watering when young but is adaptable once established, avoiding overwatering. It is generally hardy in tropical conditions, reportedly fire-resistant and only slightly frost-sensitive. Young trees may need protection from strong winds.
