About
This thorny, deciduous tree typically grows up to 8-12 metres tall, featuring smooth, grey-to-brown bark and branchlets often tipped with spines. It produces distinctive fluffy, creamy-white, scented flowers that appear on leafless twigs, followed by flattened, papery, straw-coloured pods. Native to dry bushland and scrubland across much of Africa, it is frequently found along seasonal rivers and on termite mounds.
Where it works in Kilifi
A good choice for a Kilifi-coast garden, this species thrives in full sun and is suitable for erosion control due to its deep rooting. It makes an attractive ornamental specimen when in bloom and can also serve as a shade tree, preferring well-draining soils, including clayey or deep red sands.
Growing notes
Initial growth is slow and horizontal, though overall it is considered moderately fast-growing. Once established, it is drought-tolerant and resilient, able to withstand dry conditions. Young seedlings require protection from browsing animals.
