A large semi-deciduous tree of the East African coastal forests, prized for its rich red-brown timber and striking seed pods with bright red and black seeds.
Where it works in Kilifi
Best in deep, well-drained coastal soils with full sun. Plant as a long-term shade tree or as part of a forest restoration mix — gives stately canopy at maturity.
Growing notes
Moderate growth rate. Tolerates the long Kilifi dry season once roots are established. Seeds benefit from scarification before sowing. IUCN-listed as Lower Risk; local Kenyan populations have been heavily logged.
