About
Afrocanthium kilifiense is an evergreen shrub or small tree, typically growing 2–5 metres tall, though it can reach up to 7 metres. It features slender, unarmed branches with fawn, shiny bark on young stems that flakes off, revealing light grey bark on older stems. Its glossy dark green leaves are elliptic to ovate, measuring 3–7 cm long, and it produces small, 5-petalled white flowers with a densely hairy throat. The fruits are oblong-square, slightly longer than wide, and fleshy, suggesting animal dispersal.
Where it works in Kilifi
This species is endemic to the coastal lowlands of southeastern Kenya and northeastern Tanzania, typically found in dry lowland forests and Brachystegia woodlands at elevations of 16–130 metres. It thrives in well-drained sandy or loamy soils. It is suitable for restoration plantings and can contribute to the understory of a native garden or landscape.
Growing notes
Afrocanthium kilifiense is adapted to dry forest conditions, suggesting it is drought-tolerant once established. Cultivated specimens may reach maturity within a few years under optimal conditions.
