About
This deciduous shrub or climber is characterised by its swollen, warty, globular green caudex, which can reach up to 2.5 metres in diameter. Its stems are armed with strong thorns up to 8 cm long and bear small, triangular or three-lobed leaves and greenish-white flowers. Native to dry woodlands and scrub savanna in Eastern Africa, it is traditionally used for medicinal purposes, including treating abdominal pain, and for purifying water.
Where it works in Kilifi
This unique succulent thrives in full sun to light shade, preferring its caudex to be shaded from the most intense direct sun. Plant in well-draining, sandy or rocky soil. It serves as an excellent specimen plant or for xeriscaping, particularly in open areas where its large, warty caudex and thorny, climbing stems can be appreciated.
Growing notes
A slow-growing plant, it is highly drought-tolerant once established and requires infrequent watering, allowing the soil to dry completely between sessions to prevent rot. Handle with caution, as its sap is poisonous and all parts are toxic if ingested; its strong thorns can also be hazardous.
