About
This annual herb typically grows 20-90 cm tall with erect, branching stems covered in stiff hairs. Its oval to lance-shaped leaves are opposite, coarsely toothed, and also hairy. Small, pale yellow-green to yellow flower heads (5-8 mm in diameter) appear in axillary or terminal clusters. The most distinctive feature is its star-shaped fruits, which are spiny burrs (10-18 mm wide) with hooked spines and two longer apical spines that readily cling to fur and clothing.
Where it works in Kilifi
Bristly Starbur thrives in full, direct sunlight for at least 6-8 hours daily and prefers well-draining loamy soil, though it tolerates a range of soil types. It is best suited for disturbed areas or ecological restoration where its prolific growth might be tolerated, given its tendency to spread as a weed. Due to its invasive nature, careful consideration is needed before planting in a managed garden space.
Growing notes
This species is generally fast-growing. Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant but benefits from regular watering during the growing season, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings. It is considered a weed in many tropical and subtropical regions, capable of reducing crop yields by competing for resources. Its spiny burrs can cause injury to animals and humans and can contaminate animal products.
