About
This erect annual herb, occasionally a short-lived perennial, typically reaches 30-75 cm in height, though it can grow up to 1.2 metres. It features broad ovate leaves with serrated edges and inconspicuous, minute flowers arranged in catkin-like inflorescences. The plant has a bushy appearance and is well-known for its root being attractive to domestic cats.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for a Kilifi-coast garden, this species thrives in disturbed areas such as waste grounds and roadsides, making it suitable for restoration or informal hedging. It prefers moist, well-draining loamy soil and can tolerate both bright, indirect light and partial sun, even thriving in full sun.
Growing notes
An annual plant, it prefers warm temperatures (15-27°C) and moderate to high humidity. Water regularly to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, although it can tolerate short periods of drought once established. Pruning helps maintain its shape and encourages bushier growth.
