About
An erect, stiff, densely branched shrub or small tree, Acalypha fruticosa typically grows up to 4 metres tall. Its broadly ovate leaves feature toothed margins and often have yellowish glands on their underside, which release an unpleasant smell when crushed. The plant produces minute, greenish, unisexual flowers with absent petals, and the female flowers are notable for their pink or red fringed styles. The fruit develops into a distinctive three-lobed capsule. This species is commonly found in coastal and deciduous bushland and thickets.
Where it works in Kilifi
This species thrives in full sun and requires reasonable soil, making it suitable for open areas in a Kilifi-coast garden or landscape. It can serve as a striking specimen plant, be incorporated into restoration efforts for disturbed or overgrazed sites, or form an effective live fence.

Growing up to 4 metres tall, Acalypha fruticosa prefers moist spots within otherwise dry areas, suggesting moderate water needs once established. Propagation is effectively achieved through stem cuttings, with a recommended spacing of 100 cm x 60 cm. While seed germination can be challenging, soaking seeds in cold water overnight may aid the process.
