About
This large deciduous tree typically reaches 10-15 metres, with some specimens growing up to 25 metres, and forms an open to flat-topped crown. It is distinctive for its yellowish, papery bark on younger trees, which matures to a smoother, whitish-grey and often peels in flakes. The branches and trunk are armed with numerous dark brown to black hooked thorns, usually in pairs. It produces fragrant, creamy-white to light yellow flower spikes and flat, smooth brown pods.
Where it works in Kilifi
A versatile choice for a Kilifi-coast garden, this tree thrives in full sun to dappled shade and prefers alluvial or loam soils, indicating fertile ground with good moisture. It serves well as an ornamental specimen, a shade tree, or for restoration purposes due to its nitrogen-fixing ability. Space at least 6 metres apart due to its mature size and potential invasiveness.

A fast-growing species, White thorn is relatively short-lived (30-40 years). Young trees require consistent watering until established, typically for the first year, after which they are moderately drought-tolerant but benefit from deep, infrequent irrigation during dry periods. Handle with care due to its sharp, hooked thorns.
