About
This slender, perennial climber initially grows as an herbaceous plant, later developing woody stems that twine around supporting vegetation. It features pinnately compound leaves, typically lacking a terminal leaflet. Small, pea-like flowers range from pale violet to pink. The most distinctive feature is its shiny, bright scarlet seeds with a prominent black spot at the base, encased in oblong pods that twist open at maturity.
Where it works in Kilifi
While native to many tropical regions and adaptable to well-drained, dry to moist soil conditions in full sun to bright indirect light, this species is highly invasive in tropical and subtropical areas. Due to its aggressive climbing habit, it can smother native shrubs and small trees. Planting is strongly discouraged in garden or landscape settings due to its severe toxicity and invasive nature.
Growing notes
A vigorous grower, it establishes quickly and spreads rapidly, especially in disturbed areas. Once established, it prefers consistent moisture but is intolerant of waterlogged conditions, thriving in temperatures between 15-24°C. **Extreme caution is paramount**: All parts of the plant, especially the seeds, contain abrin, an extremely potent toxin. Ingestion of even a single well-chewed seed can be fatal to humans and animals. It is considered a noxious weed in many regions.
