A small to medium-sized deciduous tree, typically growing 3-10 metres tall, featuring distinctive zigzag branchlets armed with a pair of sharp thorns, one hooked and one straight. Its glossy green leaves are ovate with an asymmetrical base, and it produces small, inconspicuous green to yellow flowers. These are followed by round, shiny drupes that ripen to a reddish-brown or dark brown colour, often persisting on the tree after the leaves have fallen.

This adaptable tree thrives in full sun and a wide range of well-drained soils, including loamy, sandy, and chalky, making it suitable for Kilifi's coastal conditions.
