Ginger is an herbaceous perennial, typically growing 60-120 cm tall, forming dense clumps from its underground rhizomes. Its shoots are pseudostems formed from tightly rolled leaf sheaths, bearing narrow, lance-shaped leaves. The plant produces cone-shaped flower spikes on separate, leafless stems, with pale yellow flowers featuring purple edges. The aromatic, pungent rhizomes are widely used as a spice and in traditional medicine.

Where it works in Kilifi

This plant thrives in warm, humid conditions typical of the Kilifi coast, requiring bright, filtered light or partial shade, away from harsh afternoon sun. It prefers well-drained, fertile, loamy soil rich in organic matter with a pH of 5.5-6.5. It can be planted as an accent specimen or in containers, with rhizomes spaced 20-30 cm apart.
