About

Zanthoxylum chalybeum is a deciduous spiny shrub or small to medium tree, typically growing up to 12 metres tall with a rounded yet open crown. Its distinctive trunk features large, conical, woody knobs adorned with sharp prickles. The compound leaves, usually comprising 3-5 pairs of shiny leaflets, emit a strong citrus-like scent when crushed.

Where it works in Kilifi

This species thrives in dry woodlands and grasslands, including coastal areas and dry forests, often found on termite mounds or in rocky locations. It tolerates well-drained red clay and coastal sands, making it suitable for restoration projects in dryland gardens or as a specimen tree.

Growing notes

Zanthoxylum chalybeum is a slow-growing, deciduous tree that, once established, is accustomed to moderate rainfall (750-1500 mm annually) and can withstand dry conditions. Propagation can be achieved through seeds, wildings, or root cuttings, though seeds should be sown immediately as they quickly lose viability. Coppicing and pollarding are recommended management practices, and it is important to note that wild populations are declining due to over-harvesting for medicinal uses.
