About

Vitex ferruginea is a small to medium-sized deciduous tree or shrub, typically growing up to 15 metres tall. It features grey to brown, finely striated bark and compound leaves with 3-7 leaflets, often exhibiting rusty hairs on the underside. Scented white to mauve-blue flowers develop into edible, fleshy, purple-black fruits up to 4 cm long, clasped by an enlarged calyx.

Where it works in Kilifi

This indigenous species is well-suited for a Kilifi-coast garden, thriving in full sun and well-drained sandy soils. It can be planted as a specimen or shade tree, offering aesthetic appeal and edible fruits.

Growing notes

Once established, it is a hardy, low-maintenance tree that tolerates heat and drought. Good soil drainage is essential to prevent root rot, and it benefits from regular watering during extended dry periods.
