About

This evergreen shrub or small tree can reach up to 6 metres, occasionally 20 metres, featuring unarmed stems and smooth, dark grey bark that may flake with age. Its shiny, trifoliolate leaves are elliptic, and it produces small, white to cream flowers in short panicles. The fruits are ovoid to subglobose, brown woody nuts or drupes, typically 0.5-1 cm long, each containing 1-2 seeds.

Where it works in Kilifi

Ideal for coastal gardens in Kilifi, this species thrives in well-drained sandy or loamy soils, particularly those on coral rag, in full sun to partial shade. It is suitable for restoration areas, coastal thickets, or as a specimen shrub.

Growing notes

Adapted to climates with a defined dry season, it requires moderate water once established. It prefers conditions of high humidity and well-drained soils.
