About
Vachellia robusta subsp. usambarensis is a deciduous thorn tree native to East tropical Africa, including Kenya, where it typically grows in seasonally dry tropical biomes as a common canopy tree in drier coastal forest communities. It reaches heights of 10-20 metres, featuring rough, grey to blackish bark and straight, paired white thorns. This subspecies is distinguished by its creamy white, scented pompom flowers and very narrow, greyish-brown seed pods.
Where it works in Kilifi
This tree is ideal for Kilifi coast gardens, thriving in full sun and a range of well-drained soils, including compost-enriched loamy soil or coral areas. It functions well as a large shade tree or for ecological restoration projects. Due to its aggressive root system, ensure ample space and plant away from permanent structures.
Growing notes
Vachellia robusta subsp. usambarensis grows relatively quickly, with a potential growth rate of up to 1 metre per year under optimal conditions. It is a hardy, drought-resistant tree with moderate water requirements once established. Caution is advised as its leaves can contain hydrogen cyanide, making them toxic to herbivores, and its brittle wood can be prone to wind damage.
