About

A multi-branched shrub, small tree or liane, typically growing 1.8 to 9 metres tall. It features dark brown, smooth bark and glossy green leaves up to 8 cm long, often pointed at the tip and slightly heart-shaped at the base. Pale yellow flowers appear singly or in pairs, leading to clusters of rough-skinned, greenish-brown fruits that ripen to yellow and contain sweet, edible pulp.

Where it works in Kilifi

This species thrives in coastal bushland and thickets, particularly in sandy soils, including red sand, from sea level up to 1400 metres. It can be planted in full sun to partial shade as an ornamental, a living fence, or for habitat restoration.

Growing notes

This plant typically grows as an evergreen shrub and is drought-tolerant once established. It can be propagated from seeds, cuttings, or wildings.
