About

A small to medium-sized tree, typically growing up to 12 meters high, with smooth, greyish-brown bark. Its alternate leaves are narrowly obovate-elliptic to obovate, pale-green and shiny above, measuring 2.5–6 cm long and 1–2.5 cm wide. It produces yellowish, nearly sessile flowers in lateral spikes, followed by pale-yellowish-green, ellipsoid-ovoid fruits, 8–12 mm long and 4.5–6 mm wide, which are acutely pointed at both ends and obscurely ridged.

Where it works in Kilifi

This indigenous coastal tree is well-suited for gardens and landscapes in Kilifi, thriving in full sun to partial shade and well-drained sandy or loamy soils. It can serve as a specimen tree, for providing shade, or in restoration efforts in coastal savanna and dune environments.

Growing notes

Terminalia boivinii exhibits high drought tolerance once established, requiring watering approximately every 2-3 weeks, allowing the soil to dry between sessions. It prefers well-drained soil and is sensitive to frost, needing protection in cooler climates.
