About

A tall, deciduous tree reaching up to 45 metres, featuring a straight trunk with large buttresses and smooth, pale yellow-white bark. Its large, ovate leaves are typically 5-7 lobed and turn from rusty hairy when young to smooth at maturity. Yellowish flowers appear before the leaves, followed by woody follicles containing pale yellow seeds that dangle on a white thread.

Where it works in Kilifi

This indigenous canopy tree thrives in coastal and riverine forest environments, suitable for large gardens or landscapes requiring substantial shade. It prefers full sun and well-drained soil, making it an excellent specimen tree in suitable open spaces along the Kilifi coast.

Growing notes

This species exhibits a fast growth rate and is relatively easy to propagate from fresh seed, with good germination success. Once established, it is drought-tolerant, but requires protection from fire.
