About
This caulescent, rhizomatous succulent is native to coastal eastern Kenya, southern Somalia, and northeastern Tanzania, forming dense stands. It features a stem reaching 120-150 cm in height, bearing spiralling, rosulate leaves that are 75-120 cm long, grey-green to green with a slightly wavy whitish or reddish margin. In summer, it produces white flowers on a tall spike-like inflorescence.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for Kilifi-coast gardens, this drought-tolerant succulent thrives in full sun to half shade and requires well-drained soil. It can be used as an ornamental specimen or in mass plantings, and is also suitable for container growing.
Growing notes
A slow-growing plant, it requires minimal watering; allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings to prevent root rot, typically every 2-3 weeks in warmer months and less frequently in cooler periods. It prefers warm temperatures (above 15°C) and is hardy in USDA zones 10+. The leaves are toxic if ingested, so place with caution around pets and children.
