About
Sansevieria conspicua is a succulent perennial herb native to East Africa, including Kenya, Malawi, and Tanzania. It typically forms a rosette of three to five ascending-spreading, lanceolate leaves, which are 23-76 cm long and 5-8.3 cm wide. The smooth leaves are dull dark green, often displaying darker longitudinal striations on the upper surface, and feature a distinctive reddish-brown margin edged with white. It is characterised by its subterranean, reddish or purplish rhizomes, and produces greenish-white to white flowers on a spike-like raceme up to 60 cm tall.
Where it works in Kilifi
In a Kilifi-coast garden, this species thrives in well-drained soil and can be sited in full sun to light shade, though it prefers bright, indirect light for optimal growth. It is an excellent choice as a drought-tolerant specimen plant, for rock gardens, or mass plantings. Given its rhizomatous growth, it can effectively fill spaces but may require management if a confined area is desired.
Growing notes
This resilient succulent is slow-growing and highly drought-tolerant, requiring minimal watering once established; overwatering is the primary cause of root rot. It prefers warm temperatures, ideally between 21-32°C (70-90°F), and should be protected from cold drafts. Fertilise sparingly, once a year in spring with a diluted general-purpose fertiliser during the growing season.
