About

Pseuderanthemum hildebrandtii is an erect shrub growing up to 2 metres tall, with pale yellow to orange-brown, smooth and shiny young stems. Its ovate leaves are glabrous to sparsely pubescent, and it produces striking orange-red to scarlet flowers with a darker centre. This species is native to Kenya and other parts of tropical Africa, typically found in coastal and lowland forest and thicket habitats.

Where it works in Kilifi

This indigenous coastal shrub thrives in Kilifi gardens, tolerating both full sun and partial shade, making it a versatile ornamental. Its vibrant flowers attract butterflies, supporting local biodiversity, and it is suitable for specimen planting or integrating into restoration projects.

Growing notes

A fast-growing evergreen shrub, Pseuderanthemum hildebrandtii is drought-tolerant once established and requires minimal care. It can be easily propagated from stem cuttings or seeds, and responds well to pruning to maintain its desired shape.
