About
This large, self-heading plant is admired for its striking, deeply lobed green leaves, which can grow up to a metre long and feature serrated edges that become more pronounced with age. As it matures, it forms a stout, tree-like trunk, though this is often obscured by the dense layers of drooping foliage. Native to South America, it adds a distinct tropical feel to any landscape.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for creating a lush, tropical statement in a Kilifi-coast garden, it thrives in part sun to partial shade, appreciating filtered light rather than intense direct sun. Plant in rich, well-draining, moisture-retentive soil, allowing ample space of at least 1.5 to 2 metres from structures or other plants, as it can reach 2.5 to 3.5 metres in height and spread. It works well as a specimen plant, informal hedge, privacy screen, or in large containers.
Growing notes
This is a moderate-growing plant that requires regular watering, allowing the top 2-5 cm of soil to dry out completely between waterings to prevent root rot. It appreciates consistent humidity and benefits from fertilisation three times a year during the growing season. All parts of the plant are toxic if ingested due to calcium oxalate crystals, so caution is advised around children and pets.
