About

Philenoptera bussei is a slender deciduous tree, typically growing 10-15 metres tall with grey, flaking bark on older specimens. Its imparipinnate leaves feature 3-7 pairs of oblong to oblanceolate leaflets, dark green above and velvety pale green below. Pale-mauve to purple, pea-shaped flowers emerge in pendulous sprays before the new leaves, followed by flat, indehiscent, straw-coloured to pale brown pods up to 10 cm long in pendulous clusters.

Where it works in Kilifi

This slender deciduous tree is well-suited for a Kilifi-coast garden or landscape, particularly in areas mimicking its natural habitat of woodlands and rocky outcrops. It can serve as a specimen tree or for shade, tolerating seasonally dry tropical conditions and is suitable for restoration plantings as it is native to Kenya.

Growing notes

As a deciduous tree thriving in seasonally dry tropical biomes, Philenoptera bussei flowers in pendulous pale-mauve to purple sprays between September and November, typically before the new leaves appear. Its pods are indehiscent. Specific details on growth rate, established water needs, or hardiness beyond its native tropical range are not widely documented.
